A couple weeks ago we took an end of the summer trip to a nearby lake with some of our best friends and had such a blast!! We packed up 7 kids, 2 Suburbans, and enough food and drinks to last a month, and made the 3 hour drive to Lake Okoboji. We had the best 4 days and I am excited to share the details of the trip and some of our favorite things we did. If you are looking to vacation in Okoboji with a young family, this is for you!
Lodging: We stayed at a condo at Bridges Bay Resort. This resort has a hotel, condominiums, and villas. Our condo had 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, laundry room, and plenty of room for the 11 of us to spread out. One of the 3 bedrooms had bunkbeds something we thought the kids would love. And while they did love, their giggles until 10pm on the first night forced us to separate them into the parents bedrooms. It was actually pretty cute as our older girls ended up on the top bunks while their dads ended up on the bottom
Entertainment: One of the best parts about Bridges Bay Resort is the indoor waterpark! We spent a whole day here (minus that precious nap time) and the kids had a blast. Harper in this picture is everything The splash park had 2 large slides, a lazy river, a dumping bucket, a pirate ship, and several smaller slides that were perfect for our age kids.
Food: Hands down, our best dining experience of the trip was Bracco Waterfront Grill and Bar. This restaurant was conveniently located at our resort. We chose to sit down in the lower bar area that was sand covered and much more casual perfect for our group of kids. We enjoyed some great drinks, live music, and amazing fish tacos. The beautiful view and sunset made this one of our favorite parts of the trip! If you make your way to Bracco, I would definitely recommend sitting in the lower area to get a more laid back, bare feet in the sand feel.
^^Swings at the bar were a favorite!! ^^Cutest coffee shop
Boating: No lake trip would be complete without heading out on the water! We loaded up drinks, food, and lots of babies, and headed out to the lake in the morning. We were so glad we rented our boat in the morning the kids were already up and the lake was much more quiet earlier in the day. We rented through Okoboji Boat Works and loved the dock to dock service. We chose the classic family boat, a pontoon with a cover. We drove around, parked and swam, and later enjoyed some beach time.
^^Harper loved boating!
Amusement Park: No trip to Okoboji would be complete without a visit to Arnolds Park! I have fond memories of parking our boat at the docks at the park and heading in for some fun. A little advice on purchasing tickets. They do allow parents to buy a rider pass which is a very reduced price and it allows one parent to ride select rides with children. I would only recommend this if your children are very young and you do not plan on having them riding many of the semi-larger rides. We purchased the full tickets and was glad we did as most of the rides our older kids found fun required an adult to ride with them. Harper rode her first ride all by herself and loved it! While it is a small park, there is a good variety on the different sizes and styles of rides.
^^The kiddos at the end of the day they did so great!! Ages: 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 1 1/2, and 6 months!
Our trip to Okoboji was the perfect way to wrap up summer. We are so fortunate to have such great friends and I love knowing our kids will have these fun times to look back on growing up! The trip from Omaha to Okoboji is an easy and one that will likely become an annual trip for us!
